About Split Rock Quarry

Split Rock Quarry is a compact, sun-soaked limestone quarry located just north of Wells in the Mendip Hills. The rock character features smooth, quarried Carboniferous limestone with clean vertical faces, technical pocket crimps, and positive volume edges. Facing due south within a sheltered hillside bowl, the crag acts as a powerful sun trap and dries very rapidly after rain showers. The route distribution offers a convenient combination of bolted sport routes and traditional wall climbs from Severe up to 7th grade sport testpieces, featuring popular lines like Split Rock Wall. The approach requires a short, five-minute walk directly from roadside parking laybys along the St Cuthbert's Way track. Excellent sun exposure makes it a fine venue during cooler months, though summer afternoons can be hot.
