About The Precipice (Champlain South Wall)

The Precipice — also known to climbers as Champlain South Wall — is the most substantial multi-pitch climbing in Acadia, a 200-foot east-facing glaciated pink Cadillac Mountain Granite wall on the south side of Champlain Mountain on Mount Desert Island. The rock is high-quality solid granite with excellent dihedrals; routes are 2–3 pitches of traditional protection with a standard rack of mixed stoppers and small-to-medium cams. The classics are all classic-grade lines: Story of O (5.6, three pitches), Old Town (5.7+), Green Mountain Breakdown (5.9+, two pitches), Chitlins Corner (5.10a, two pitches), and Connecticut Cracks (5.11a). The famous Precipice Trail — one of Acadia's iron-rung scrambles up the cliffside of Champlain Mountain — shares the same face. — the Precipice Trail and climbing routes are both closed during that window (a few routes right of Wafer Step are affected; check nps.gov/acad for current dates). Shares Acadia's weather cell with Otter Cliffs (~5km south). Access from the Precipice Trailhead on Park Loop Road — a 100-metre walk past the trailhead, then traverse left across a talus field to the base. Parking is severely limited; use the park shuttle in summer. Acadia NP entrance fee $35/vehicle 7-day. Documented in Grant Simmons's *Rock Climbs of Acadia* (Jeff Butterfield's 2002 guide is now out of print).
