The Roaches Lower Tier is a towering, celebrated gritstone cliff located in the Staffordshire Peak District, famous for its massive roofs and continuous walls. The rock is exceptionally high-quality, coarse-grained gritstone providing immense friction. Facing southwest, the cliff enjoys sunshine for most of the day and dries quickly, although the deep dark roofs and corner cracks can retain moisture after prolonged rainfall. The climbing style is physical and dramatic, featuring iconic roof pull-overs, strenuous hand jams, and delicate slab moves from Severe to E6. Legendary routes include Valkyrie, Saul's Crack, and the wild overhang of The Sloth. The crag is reached via a five-minute walk up a stone track from the roadside parking bay. The presence of sustained overhangs requires good pump management and specialized crack technique.
