Tryfan (Heather Terrace & Grooved Arete) is one of the most iconic mountain venues in Snowdonia, featuring rough, high-friction Ogwen volcanic rock. The dark rock is firm, featured, and offers excellent handholds, though mountain gullies and deep chimneys retain moisture following heavy fell rain. Facing east along the Heather Terrace, the cliff gets early morning sun before falling into shade, while its high mountain altitude over 700 metres exposes it to cold mountain winds. Grade coverage is heavily focused on classic lower-grade traditional scrambles and multi-pitch routes, epitomised by the legendary Grooved Arete. The approach involves a sustained, forty-five minute steep mountain hike from the Ogwen Cottage laybys along A5. Mountain weather changes rapidly at this altitude, making warm clothing, navigation tools, and helmets mandatory.
