About Bell Buttress

Bell Buttress is Boulder Canyon's tallest north-facing wall — a mostly-north-facing Boulder Creek Granodiorite tower opposite Practice Rock in the middle canyon, holding many of the area's oldest and most-respected trad routes. As Mountain Project puts it: "with its north-facing exposure, the wall stays in the shade until early afternoon so summer outings are cool, but on winter days you're probably better off with another wall." The tick list skews harder than Cob Rock — few pure moderates — but the classics are excellent: Wisdom Tooth (5.10b), Cussin' Crack (5.7), Cozyhang (5.7+), Cornucopia (5.9), and Northwest Corner (5.7). Bell's north aspect and mid-canyon altitude (1,830m) make it the go-to Front Range refuge on midsummer heat waves when Cactus Cliff at Shelf Road would boil off. Shares Boulder Canyon Middle weather cell with Cob Rock (~1.5km). Roadside pull-off; USFS land, no fee.
