About Elephant Buttresses (Boulder Canyon Mouth)

Elephant Buttresses is the first climbing you hit when driving up Boulder Canyon — a south-facing Boulder Creek Granodiorite crag on the north side of the canyon at Mile 0.5, five minutes from downtown Boulder. Roughly 47 trad routes plus 17 boulder problems on dense 1.7-billion-year-old Precambrian granite. Consensus classics span the friendly grade range: East Slab (5.5) is one of the canyon's most-climbed single-pitch trad outings; Cussin' Crack (5.7) and Cozyhang (5.7) are the moderate ticks; King Conqueror (5.10a) is the harder marquee. South aspect and low altitude (1,646m — the lowest cragging in the canyon) mean it dries within an hour of a summer shower and stays climbable through most of winter on sunny days. Roadside parking pull-off; USFS land, no fee. Boulder Climbing Community (boulderclimbers.org) maintains the approach trails and anchor-replacement schedule.
