About Happy Boulders

The Happy Boulders are Bishop's most-visited winter bouldering venue — a compact horseshoe-shaped ravine cut into the welded rhyolitic Bishop Tuff on the Volcanic Tableland north of town, described by Mountain Project as 'highly concentrated world-class volcanic bouldering with hundreds of worthy problems ranging from simple to ridiculous'. The volcanic tuff features finger pockets, steep overhangs, crimpy faces, and traverses. Compared to the nearby Buttermilks, climbers find the rock better for muscle endurance and the lower elevation offers warmer winter conditions. The ravine walls create shade and shelter — many climbers alternate between Happies and Buttermilks based on wind and temperature. Free BLM access via the Chalk Bluff Road pull-out; stay off the plants, stay on trail, pack out trash.
