About Owens River Gorge

The Owens River Gorge is 'California's most concentrated sport-climbing area' per Mountain Project — a 200m-deep gorge cut by the Owens River into the harder, densely welded lower part of the Bishop Tuff. Over 800 fully-bolted sport routes across three sectors (Central, Upper, Lower) with the highest concentration in the 5.10–5.11 range. Rock features edges, pockets and cracks on mostly vertical rock with some steep sections. The gorge walls create a genuine year-round climbing environment — shaded sectors offer relief in mid-summer heat and sheltered sectors stay usable through winter. — routes are being re-equipped at 40m depth. Access via LADWP-managed land off Highway 395; no overnight camping at access points, use designated parking. Long walk down 200m of vertical into the gorge — plan approach and exit carefully.
