About Idwal Slabs
Classic introduction to multi-pitch mountain climbing. East-facing slabs in Cwm Idwal — morning sun, multi-pitch routes to ~160m. Polished from popularity. The descent corner stays damp longer than the slabs themselves. Up to V Diff / Severe is the bread and butter. The rock is an expansive sheet of inclined volcanic rock, highly polished on lower classics but offering reliable friction, small dish holds, and clean natural crack protection. Central drainage lines hold seepage for a while after heavy rain. Iconic mountain classics include Tennis Shoe (HS 4a), Hope (V Diff), Faith (V Diff), and Lazarus (VS 4c). Approach is a pleasant twenty-minute walk along established stone paths from the Ogwen Cottage visitor centre. Weekend congestion is severe on popular routes — early starts help avoid long queues at stance belays.
