About Milestone Buttress

One of the Ogwen Valley's most accessible and attractive crags, hanging on the northern flank of Tryfan directly above the A5 near the old milestone. Ten minutes' walk from the road, three or four pitches of excellent (if slightly polished) rhyolite, and views up the valley from every stance. Direct Route (VDiff), first climbed in 1910 by Barlow and Priestley-Smith, is the canonical Ogwen introductory multi-pitch — a slab-and-groove opener, an easy corner, and then a steep crack past blocks with an exciting 'letter box' move to top out. Soapgut and Milestone Direct extend the range at VS. Faces broadly north-west, so shady by mid-afternoon; upper sections retain moss and lichen where shade lingers.
