About Near Trapps
Near Trapps sits five minutes' walk east of the Trapps across Route 44/55, a shorter but equally classic band of Shawangunk conglomerate. Its cliff faces north-west, opposite the Trapps — the two crags on the same ridge get very different sun. The list of moderates is legendary and Mountain Project's top-ranked include Gelsa (5.4, one of the most-ticked routes in the Gunks), Disneyland (5.6), Yellow Ridge (5.7), Alphonse (5.8), and Birdland (5.8+). The stone, roofs, and drying character mirror the Trapps — the two crags share a weather anchor since they sit on the same ridge less than a kilometre apart. Mohonk Preserve day pass required ($20 day, $115 annual). Park at the West Trapps lot ($125 fines for parking longer than posted in the 30-minute zone). Route-level peregrine closures apply in spring — check the Peregrine Watch page on mohonkpreserve.org before you go rather than assuming a fixed window. Prime seasons April–June and September–November; the north-west aspect means afternoon sun and early-morning shade — often more comfortable than the Trapps midsummer.
