About Peterskill
Peterskill sits inside Minnewaska State Park Preserve, four kilometres south-west of the main Trapps cliffs — the same Shawangunk conglomerate but a friendlier introduction to Gunks climbing with shorter single-pitch walls (50–80 ft), better-protected moderates, and top-rope-friendly bolt anchors popular with guides and instructors. Mountain Project's top-ranked routes are Bunk Arete (5.6), The Kling-On (5.7), Reach Around (5.8), Psycho Crack Right (5.8), and The Golden Dream (5.9). NY State Parks requires a climbing/bouldering permit (day fee $10 per climber, season pass $90) — check in at the Peterskill entry station on arrival. Daily quotas apply: 100 roped climbers and 30 boulderers, so weekend arrivals should aim for the 9 AM park opening. Rock climbing is NOT permitted November through late April (park winter closure). Empire Passport or day-use vehicle fee at the park entrance is on top of the climbing permit. Best conditions April through November — hot midsummer afternoons on the south-west aspect are grim.
