Mohonk Preserve manages route-level peregrine closures dynamically each year — routes reopen once young have fledged. Check the Peregrine Watch page on mohonkpreserve.org before you travel; kiosks at the West Trapps parking area post the current list.

About The Trapps

The Trapps is the flagship crag of the Shawangunks and one of the most historically important trad venues in North America — a mile-long band of horizontally bedded Shawangunk conglomerate above the Mohonk Preserve carriage road, ninety minutes north of New York City. The quartz-cemented conglomerate is near non-porous and famously durable, with huge horizontal roofs that shed rain and keep classic pitches dry through showers. High Exposure (5.6) is arguably the most iconic 5.6 in the country; Son of Easy O (5.8), Arrow (5.8), Bonnie's Roof (5.9), and Ants' Line (5.9) are the moderate must-ticks with hundreds of ratings each on Mountain Project. April–June and September–November are prime — midsummer bakes on the south-east-facing wall and winter climbing is a real option on sunny days. Mohonk Preserve day pass required ($20 day, $115 annual as of 2025); rangers actively check passes on the carriage road. Peregrine falcon closures on named routes typically run March through late July but the Preserve manages them route-by-route and lifts each closure as soon as the young fledge — check mohonkpreserve.org before travelling rather than assuming a fixed window.
