About Chapel Pond Slab
Chapel Pond Slab is the Adirondacks' most beloved beginner-friendly multi-pitch — a 700-foot low-angle anorthosite slab rising above Chapel Pond on the west side of Route 73 between Keene Valley and North Hudson. The rock is Adirondack anorthosite: dense, high-friction plagioclase feldspar with excellent knobs and edges. Bob's Knob Standard (5.3) and Regular Route (5.5) are two of the most-climbed multi-pitch outings in the Northeast; Empress (5.5), Greensleeves (5.6), and Thanksgiving (5.7) round out the classic list for competent leaders. South-east aspect and modest elevation give pleasant midsummer temperatures. The slab shares a weather anchor with the nearby Beer Walls and Spider's Web — all sit on the same Chapel Pond flank within a kilometre of each other. Roadside pull-off parking on Route 73 or the main Chapel Pond lot; DEC land, no permits or fees. NY DEC's 2025 monitoring focuses on the Washbowls (nearby) rather than the slab itself — no active bird ban here as of writing.
