About Wallface

Wallface is the biggest cliff in New York State — an 800-foot anorthosite wall high above Indian Pass in the Adirondack High Peaks Wilderness, reached by a 4-mile (roughly 3-hour) hike from the Upper Works trailhead near Henderson Lake. This is wilderness climbing: no cell service, no easy retreat, and weather that changes fast. The face is west-facing across Indian Pass toward the MacIntyre Range, so it gets afternoon sun and morning shade — bring headlamps for early starts. Mountain Project's top-ranked routes are Case Route (5.5, six pitches), The Diagonal (5.8, the most popular line), Lewis Elijah (5.9, eight pitches), and Free Ride (5.11a). The wall is universally described as damp with long seepage lines and broken alpine rock; mid-July through early September gives the reliable window. Access is DEC High Peaks Wilderness (forever-wild land) with no permit or reservation system — just self-register at the Upper Works trailhead. Free. Blackflies vicious through June. No active peregrine ban at Wallface but the Adirondack Climbers' Coalition tracks nesting each spring.
