About Corby's Crag

Corby's Crag is a popular, accessible cliff of Fell Sandstone located near Alnwick, featuring compact buttresses and clean-cut vertical fissures. The rock character is exceptionally solid, boasting textured face holds, positive breaks, and satisfying jam cracks. Facing south at a low elevation, the crag acts as a sun trap, drying rapidly even after heavy showers and offering pleasant conditions on cool sunny days. The climbing style is technical yet approachable, featuring a dense concentration of quality mid-grade traditional routes from Severe to E2. Standard classics include Corby's Corner (VS 4c), The Groove (E1 5b), and The Crack (HS 4b). The approach is among the shortest in the county, taking less than five minutes along a flat path from nearby roadside parking. The main consideration here is maintaining strict sandstone ethics; avoiding top-rope abrasion on the crag's top edges and staying off damp rock ensures hold preservation for future visitors.
