Great Wanney is a striking cliff of dark Fell Sandstone overlooking Wanney Crag Lough, renowned for its imposing vertical walls and clean crack lines. The rock offers magnificent friction, featuring solid jams, sharp breaks, and technical face holds. Occupying a south-facing aspect at moderate altitude, the crag absorbs substantial heat and sunshine, drying remarkably fast once rainfall ceases. The venue caters primarily to traditional climbers operating from VS up into the upper E-grades, offering physical and atmospheric routes. Classic climbs including Wanney Crack (VS 4c), The Mark of Zorro (E2 5c), and Thin Red Line (E3 5c) form the centerpiece of any visit. The approach requires a pleasant twenty-minute walk through farmland and moorland from local road pull-offs. The paramount factor at Great Wanney is vehicle parking and farm access; parking considerately in designated spots ensures access remains open, while respecting agricultural land during lambing season is essential.
