About Simonside

Simonside forms a dramatic crest high above the Coquet Valley, presenting prominent Fell Sandstone escarpments with commanding views. The rock is characteristically tough and weathered, offering steep handholds, wide cracks, and exposed arêtes. Facing predominantly north at a elevated altitude, the main crag remains shaded for much of the day and can hold seepage in deeper fissures for extended periods following rain. The climbing style favors bold, physical movement and traditional gear placement across a solid intermediate-to-advanced grade spectrum. Highlights of the crag include Gollum (E2 5c), The Far Side (E1 5b), and Simonside Crack (VS 4c). The approach involves a steady uphill hike along forest tracks and established upland paths from the main forestry car park. Climbers must be mindful of exposure; cold winds and persistent shade mean warm gear is essential, and checking seepage conditions after wet weather is vital before planning a visit.
