About Goat Crag (Borrowdale)

Goat Crag provides an intimidating, highly featured wall of dark Borrowdale volcanic rock overlooking the entrance to the valley. The rock is exceptional, boasting incredible friction, sharp crimps, and bulletproof wall textures. Facing northwest, the crag receives sun only in the late evening, meaning shaded roofs and technical wall faces remain cool and dry slowly during damp seasons. Grade distribution is skewed towards steep, strenuous, and sustained E-grades requiring technical wall work and high stamina. Iconic routes like Footless Crow and Prana represent historic milestones in British traditional climbing. The approach is a direct fifteen-minute walk up steep hillside paths from the Grange road laybys. Sound gear placement skill is vital, as falling off steep upper sections can result in long, clean falls.
