About Sergeant Crag Slabs

Sergeant Crag Slabs sit high on the eastern side of the wild Langstrath valley, offering some of the finest slab climbing anywhere in the Lake District on rough, high-friction Borrowdale volcanic rock. The south-westerly aspect makes this a genuine sun trap through the afternoon and evening, and the ~40m slabs dry rapidly thanks to the clean angle and open exposure. Grade coverage is concentrated in the VS to E3 bracket, dominated by long, sustained pitches with well-spaced but reliable protection. Lakeland Cragsman (HVS 5a) is a McHaffie favourite and one of the classic slab routes of the region. The approach takes around an hour up the pleasant Langstrath path from Stonethwaite village. Remote setting, so plan for a full day — but the climbing rewards the walk-in.
