About Shepherd's Crag

Roadside crag above Derwentwater — one of the fastest-drying crags in Borrowdale ('if Keswick pavements are dry, Shepherd's will have something dry'). West-facing — best in afternoon/evening. Up to 50m. Great range of grades. Arguably the most famous and frequented valley cliff in the Lake District, with fine-grained Borrowdale volcanic rock giving intricate features, crisp edges, and firm holds. Grade coverage spans accessible Moderates to technical E-grades, with steep wall climbing, delicate arêtes, and well-protected corner grooves. Historic testpieces like Little Chamonix (VD) and Conclusion (E1 5b) showcase the diverse movement and fine quality found across all sectors. Access is exceptionally easy, taking under ten minutes along flat paths from the roadside parking or farm tea room. Weekend crowding often leads to queuing on the lower-grade classics.
