About Reecastle Crag

Reecastle Crag stands above the Ashness Bridge road on the way to Watendlath, a steep west-facing bastion of rough Borrowdale volcanic rock famed among Lakes trad climbers for its concentration of hard, well-protected wall and crack routes. The overhanging nature of the main buttresses means the rock drains fast and dries surprisingly quickly after rain — a valuable reserve when higher mountain crags stay soaked. Approach is under ten minutes from the small layby below the crag on the Watendlath road. Bird nesting is possible in spring — check BMC RAD before visiting.
