Max Quarry is a compact, disused limestone quarry situated above the village of Stoney Middleton. The rock presents smooth, vertical quarried limestone faces with sharp crimps, thin seams, and small technical ledges. Facing south, the quarry traps sun effectively on clear days and dries rapidly on open upper walls, though lower corners retain dampness after rain. The climbing style is technical, balance-intensive sport climbing primarily concentrated between 6b and 7b+. Standout classics like Mad Max test finger strength and precise foot placement. Approach the quarry via a brief ten-minute uphill walk along woodland tracks from Stoney Middleton laybys. Being a disused quarry site, loose rock can occasionally fall from upper uncleaned ledges, requiring helmet awareness.
