About Am Fasgadh (Gairloch)

Am Fasgadh — literally 'The Shelter' in Gaelic — is a compact but severely overhanging Lewisian gneiss cave in the hills near Gairloch, developed exclusively for hard sport climbing. The rock is Scotland's classic bomb-proof gneiss: positive holds, sharp incuts, and roof jugs on some of the oldest rock on the planet, with steep enough angles that the crag remains virtually permanently dry regardless of what the weather is doing outside. Grades start at Fr7c and go up, with the three-star trio Black Sox, Tog Balla and Primo — all Fr7c — the defining lines. Because the overhang keeps the rock sheltered, this is one of the few Scottish venues that is a genuine option during a raining week. The approach takes twenty to thirty minutes up open hillside from parking near the A832. The venue is for strong climbers only; there is nothing here in easier grades.
