About Doonies Yawns Boulders

Doonies Yawns is a series of four narrow granite chasms on the coast just south of Aberdeen city, and the boulders scattered around the clifftop have become a popular Aberdeen city bouldering venue — a genuine after-work option ten minutes from the city centre. The rock is rough Aberdeen granite: reliable friction on slopers, sharp crimps, and clean edges, with the surface texture forgiving enough that greasy air conditions don't kill it the way they do polished coastal venues elsewhere. Aspects vary boulder by boulder along the coastal shelf so it's usually possible to find a sunny or shady block, and the crag is non-tidal — unusual for the Aberdeen coast. Problems run from friendly Font 4 slabs up to solid Font 6/7 roofs and aretes. Approach is a five-minute walk from parking at the coastguard station off the Cove Bay road; the exposed clifftop position keeps things wind-dried but also windy.
