About Newtonhill (Harbour Wall & Backdoor Wall)
Newtonhill Bay sits eight miles south of Aberdeen and holds two of the finest sea-cliff sectors on the coast, Harbour Wall and Backdoor Wall, linked by a large cave you walk through at low tide. Harbour Wall is a sun-catching, south-of-east-facing sheet with clean vertical wall climbing on positive edges and pockets, while Back Door Wall — its non-tidal continuation — gives shady, sheltered trad on wire cracks and steep grooves. The rock is Dalradian metasedimentary — the psammite-schist belt that begins south of the Aberdeen granite pluton at Cove Bay — sound and well weathered, drying fast in the constant coastal wind. Grades span from S up to solid Extremes and there is one classic single sport line, Underbelly (Fr7b) in the through-cave, which is one of the best hard routes on the coast. Approach is a five-minute walk from parking at the end of Skateraw Road and down the path to the beach; tide tables are essential — Harbour Wall demands half tide or lower for base access.
