About Souter Head

Souter Head is one of the best known and earliest developed sections of the Aberdeen coast, a broad granite headland just south of the city with a dense concentration of routes running from friendly Severes to solid Extremes. The rock is coarse Aberdeen granite, sound and well weathered, offering rough friction, positive hand-jams, and reliable gear on wire-crack systems typical of the area. Facing east into the North Sea, the headland catches direct morning light and dries fast in even light coastal breezes, though the base ledges are covered by all but the lowest tides. Grades cover the traditional mid-range with headline routes Mythical Wall, Southeast Diedre and Brooker's Arete, and the Rainbow Inlet sector holds accessible easier climbs. Approach takes fifteen minutes from parking at Burnbanks Village near the Cove Bay junction, crossing the railway line by the pedestrian bridge and following clifftop paths south to the pools above the crag.
