About Camp 4 Boulders

The Camp 4 boulders are the birthplace of American bouldering — the massive polished granite blocks scattered through the historic climbers' campground on the north side of the valley, southwest of Yosemite Lodge. The chalk-lightning bolt on the Columbia Boulder marks Midnight Lightning (V8), first sent by Ron Kauk in 1978 — arguably the most-photographed boulder problem in the world. Bachar Cracker (V4), Blue Suede Shoes (V5), Cocaine Corner (V5), and Battle of the Bulge (V6) are the other must-tick classics. Shaded by valley oaks and pines — dries fast but can be damp under the canopy. Camp 4 itself is on the National Register of Historic Places; day-use walk-ins welcome. Prime season is April through October.
