Bird ban (03-01 to 07-15)
Peregrine falcon closure on SW face routes between and including 'Octopussy' and 'Dihedral Wall'. Adjusts and lifts based on each nesting family — most years fully open by mid-July. Check nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/climbingclosures.htm before racking up.
Spring snowmelt (04-15 to 06-15)
Great Roof, Changing Corners and NA Wall seep lines are typically active through mid-June after a normal Sierra winter — even in dry surface weather

About El Capitan

El Capitan is the most famous piece of rock in the world — a 900-metre monolith of El Capitan Granite (per USGS a biotite granite / silicic granodiorite pluton, part of the Sierra Nevada Batholith) that defines Yosemite Valley's western entrance. The Nose (5.14a free / VI 5.9 C2 aid) is the definitive big-wall route; Freerider, Salathé Wall, and Zodiac are the other must-tick classics on a career-defining scale. The south-facing wall bakes in summer (dangerous mid-day heat, especially on the Nose) and freezes in winter, so the prime windows are May–early June and September–October. Water seeps for weeks after Sierra storms on the North America Wall side and in the Great Roof / Camp 4 areas of the Nose. Peregrine falcon closures affect a small strip of SW-face routes March through mid-July. Approach: El Cap Meadow off Northside Drive.
