About Higher Cathedral Rock

Higher Cathedral Rock is the taller of the two Cathedral formations, perched uphill from Middle Cathedral on the south side of the valley (summit ~1690m). The Northeast Buttress (5.9+, 11 pitches) is widely regarded on Mountain Project as 'the best 5.9 in the Valley' and Braille Book (5.8+, 6 pitches) is a superb moderate. The peregrine closure is the sting: routes between Power Point and The North Face are closed March 1 through July 15 in most years, so the reliable window is late July through October. Popular routes catch morning sun on the southeast side. Approach: same trailhead as Middle Cathedral, then ninety minutes of scree uphill.
