About Middle Cathedral Rock

Middle Cathedral Rock is Yosemite Valley's largest north-facing wall — a 700m sweep of Sentinel Granodiorite directly opposite El Cap across the valley. The north aspect keeps it shaded and cool through summer (welcome when El Cap is baking) but the trade-off is slow drying — seepage lines run for weeks after Sierra storms and the wall can be genuinely wet into July after heavy snow years. The East Buttress (5.9 A0 / 5.10c free, in Roper & Steck's 50 Classic Climbs) and Central Pillar of Frenzy (5.9) are the moderate must-ticks; the 17-pitch Direct North Buttress and 13-pitch Kor-Beck raise the ante. Rockfall has occurred on DNB and the descent gully — worth knowing. Approach: pull-out on Northside Drive, ten-minute talus scramble.
