About Hetton Crags

Hetton Crags offers a clean sequence of small Fell Sandstone buttresses set above quiet agricultural country near Lowick. The rock character is firm, providing reliable friction, crisp horizontal breaks, and distinct vertical crack systems. Facing south at a low elevation, the crag acts as a reliable sun trap, drying rapidly after showers and catching light winter breezes. The climbing style favors technical wall climbing and neat jams, primarily appealing to climbers working in the Severe to E2 grade range. Key routes include Hetton Corner (VS 4c) and Hetton Face (E1 5b). The approach requires a simple ten-minute walk across private farmland following designated rights of way. Climbers must prioritize farmer goodwill by keeping strictly to path lines, leaving farm gates exactly as found, and avoiding any disruption to livestock.
