How fast do the Val di Mello boulders dry after rain?

Fast — ghiandone granite is impermeable Alpine rock and behaves identically to standard granite in our drying model (8-hour base drying). Even after a summer thunderstorm, Sasso Remenno's many faces come back within a few hours if the wind picks up. Il Francese's meadow and light forest hold moisture a little longer — treat a full clear day as the minimum after real rain, and don't bother when the ground is still damp.

Where does the 30-year weather and snow data come from?

MeteoSwiss OGD — 30 years of daily weather AND daily snow-depth observations (1995–2024) from the Poschiavo/Robbia automatic station (1078 m, 32 km from Val di Mello over the Bernina crest). MeteoSwiss opened its full historical archive under Creative Commons BY 4.0 in January 2025, so we can use it commercially with attribution. Poschiavo is in the same inner-Alpine climate zone as Val di Mello, at essentially the same altitude, and cross-validates against the closer Vicosoprano station at Pearson r = 0.960 on monthly rain totals and r = 0.991 on wet-day counts.

Val di Mello is Italy's answer to Yosemite in miniature — the biggest erratic boulder in Europe on the valley floor at Sasso Remenno, and a bouldering meadow full of scattered ghiandone erratics at Il Francese, a flat 30–60 minute walk up the valley. How we calculated this

We took every day from 1995 to 2024 at the MeteoSwiss OGD Poschiavo/Robbia station (1078 m, 32 km from Val di Mello) — real weather, real observed daily snow depth — and ran each day through our drying model for Sasso Remenno and Il Francese. Poschiavo is in the same inner-Alpine climate zone as Val di Mello at essentially the same altitude, cross-validated against the closer Vicosoprano station at Pearson r = 0.960 on monthly rain. Observed snow depth is converted to snow-water-equivalent (at ρ = 300 kg/m³, settled Alpine snow) and injected into the drying model's snow accumulator, so the model's own thresholds (≥3 mm SWE → RED) fire against real ground truth rather than a modelled degree-day balance. Each day gets a GREEN, AMBER or RED status; the chart above is the 30-year average % GREEN per calendar month.
