About Birchen Edge

East-facing — gets morning sun and dries reasonably fast. Very popular beginner/improver crag. Classics: Nelson's Column and the three carved 'ships' boulders. The rock is rough, featured gritstone with abundant large holds, deep cracks, and solid ledge systems — one of the absolute best locations in the Peak District for introductory trad leading. Other classics include Topsail (HS 4b), Sail Buttress (VS 4c), and Nelson's Monument (VD). Access takes under ten minutes along a clear uphill path from the Robin Hood pub parking area. Polished footholds on the most famous easy routes are the main detail to watch out for.
