About Stanage Plantation
The Plantation section of Stanage faces south-west like the rest of the edge, so the crag itself takes the mid-morning sun and dries as fast as Popular End once the wind gets to it. The famous Plantation boulders are a different story. They sit lower down among the trees, so they hold moisture for longer and are best avoided for a while after rain, especially in winter when the low sun barely reaches them. Conversely, the trees give a little shade on hot summer days. The area is almost always busy, so a quiet midweek morning in crisp autumn conditions is the best time for both routes and problems. Hollin Bank car park (75 spaces, pay and display) is just below. The plantation itself was felled in places to remove diseased larch, so the approach paths may differ from older guides.
