About Horseshoe Quarry
Horseshoe is the Peak's most popular limestone quarry, with a big spread of low- and mid-grade sport routes, and it's quick drying. The main walls face south-west and the quarry is sheltered, so on a calm, sunny winter day it turns into a sun trap. Climbers report T-shirt conditions on the main wall while it's below freezing in the car park. On the other hand, it can be baking in a summer heatwave and is best in the cooler months. Wind matters more than temperature: a cold northerly takes the edge off the shelter. The BMC has owned the main section since 2005 and re-bolted those routes in 2019. Routes on the parts it doesn't own have older, unchecked bolts. Avoid moving the rock piles on the quarry floor, which shelter amphibians, and watch for loose rock above the main wall.
