About Stanage Popular End
Stanage Popular is the busiest section of Britain's most popular crag, and its south-west aspect is the reason. It catches the sun from mid-morning, so it's exposed to whatever weather blows in from the west, but it dries quickly. A westerly or southerly breeze will dry the rock within a couple of hours of a shower, although a few routes can stay damp and sandy. Winter days can be perfect if the sun is out and the wind is light or from the east. Calm summer afternoons can get very hot, and the grit loses friction. At around 450m it's always a few degrees colder than Sheffield, so dress for the edge rather than the city. Pay-and-display parking at Hollin Bank and along the road below. Ring ouzels nest along Stanage each spring, so look out for signs marking sensitive buttresses.
