About The Roaches
The Roaches face south-west, so the rock gets the sun from mid-morning and is often at its best on a late-afternoon in spring or autumn. How quickly it dries depends on where you are on the hillside. The Upper Tier and the Skyline sit just below the ridge, catch the wind and are the first to dry after rain. The Lower Tier and the Five Clouds are lower down and more sheltered, so give them longer. A few north-facing corners and cracks stay green into spring. At around 450m the edge feels noticeably colder than the eastern edges, so a breezy, sunny day after rain is ideal; still, humid days can leave the grit greasy. The ground around the Spring Boulders is usually boggy through winter. Peregrines have nested on the Upper Tier in the past, so check the BMC RAD for spring restrictions before you go.
