About Harpur Hill Quarry
Harpur Hill is a sprawling set of quarried limestone walls on the hill above Buxton. Most of the best climbing faces north-east or north-west, so it gets little direct sun, and the exposed plateau catches the wind even on apparently still days. That makes it one of the coldest crags in the Peak outside summer, but also a great escape from the heat in July and August. The upside of all that wind is that the walls dry quickly after rain. On a cool day you can follow the sun round, starting at the Darkness area in the morning and moving to Sanctuary, Prophecy and Papacy later. Sanctuary also offers some shelter from the wind. With over 400 routes, it rivals Horseshoe for low and mid-grade sport. Upper walls that aren't maintained hold loose rock, and you should check the BMC RAD for current access.
